phases of the treatment
phase 1: intense depigmentation
In this phase, the melanin deposits are removed and the renewal of the first layers of the skin is stimulated, improving its appearance and reducing the spot's intensity.
application guideline:
The aesthetic professional applies the cosmelan 1 mask with an intensive depigmenting action.
After applying the mask, the customer will go home, allowing it to act for the time indicated by the professional, between 8 and 12 hours.
phase 2: continuous depigmentation
48-72 hours after removing the mask, it is necessary to complete the corrective action of the method and to regulate the overproduction of melanin.
application guideline:
We start with the daily application of cosmelan 2, together with melan recovery and melan 130 pigment control.
Apply cosmelan 2 three times a day (morning, midday and night) followed by melan recovery and melan 130 pigment control during daytime applications.
phase 3: regulating hyperpigmentation
In this phase we continue working on the root of the problem: the overproduction of melanin in a localised way. It should be regulated to avoid the hyperpigmentation's reappearance and unify the skin tone.
application guideline:
Apply cosmelan 2 morning and night followed by melan recovery and melan 130 pigment control during the day. In case of sun exposure, reapply UV protection every two hours.
phase 4: controlling reappearance
During this phase, the treatment prevents the reappearance of the treated spots and the formation of new ones, for a longer-lasting result, as the tendency to develop spots represents an ongoing risk.
application guideline:
Apply cosmelan 2 at night followed by melan recovery. Apply melan 130 pigment control during the day and reapply in case of direct sun exposure.

FAQs cosmelan®

Does cosmelan® work with any type of spot?

With cosmelan® we treat all types of spots of melanin origin, that is, spots originating due to melanin overproduction triggered by several factors (hormonal, genetic, post-acne, post-depilation factors, etc.) that worsen due to sun exposure. Therefore, cosmelan® is effective to treat spots such as: melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentations (PIH), solar, senile lentigo and freckles.

What is the best time to use cosmelan®?

cosmelan® can be used at any time of the year, though it is advisable to do it at times when sun exposure is not so intense or prolonged, such as the winter and autumn. In case you live in a hot region or apply the treatment in the summer, you must take greater care and use a very high sunscreen, such as melan 130+ pigment control and avoid completely very intense and prolonged sun exposure.

How long does the treatment last?

The cosmelan® method consists of four phases which are necessary to achieve the target result. Intensive depigmentation in phase 1 and treatment for home use in phases 2, 3 and 4. The total duration of treatment is about 6 months, that can change based on the severity of the case.

How long will it take to see the results? Why should I continue the treatment if the results are already seen before completing it?

The most significant change takes place a few weeks after applying the mask in cabin, it improves skin texture and spots decrease noticeably. This can give a misleading feeling of success. During this period melanin has been removed from the outermost skin layers, and therefore we see the spot much more faded and the skin smoother and softer, but the origin of the problem has not been controlled yet. The melanocyte, a cell where melanin is produced, is still uncontrolled and continues to produce pigment (melanin) in excess. To re-educate the melanocyte and control this overproduction, it is important to continue a home treatment with regulating action, so that the cell returns to a normal active state and therefore prevent spots from reappearing.

What happens if I stop applying the home treatment?

If you do not follow the home regimen, you are interrupting the treatment and will therefore not obtain the expected results. Not applying cosmelan 2 depigmenting cream with regulating action involves not regulating the melanocyte and, therefore, a persistent uncontrolled, excessive production of melanin. The spot will reappear as the skin layers are renewed, as melanin migrates to the surface making the spot increasingly evident.
Not using photoprotection, melan 130+ pigment control, involves a very high risk that the spot returns, as skin is more sensitive and receptive to external aggressions during the treatment.

Can I combine the cosmelan® method with other depigmentation treatments?

During at least the first three months of the method, it is NOT recommended to use any other type of minimally invasive treatment that can cause a skin lesion, as well as peels, microneedling, exfoliations, etc., as it can even cause repigmentation. It is advisable to use soothing and regenerating treatments both in cabin and at home in case it is needed.
In the last months where we reduce the application guidelines of cosmelan 2 only to the night, we can combine it with treatments that help prolong the results, such as melan tran3x concentrate and melan tran3x gel-cream.

Does the treatment make me unable to fulfil my daily life activities normally?

As it is not an invasive treatment, it does not make you unable to fulfil your activities of daily living normally. Caution must be exerted when fulfilling some type of activities during the first days, a skin adaptation period after the in-clinic treatment. For instance, it is advisable to avoid bathing in swimming pools, prolonged sun exposure and activities that involve excessive sweating.

Can the spots return after the end of treatment?

After an adequate professional treatment, excess pigmentation can be removed visibly. However, it is a dynamic process, where the imbalance forming them can cause their recurrence. Therefore, even if the spots are not seen, it is essential to apply a daily regulatory depigmentation treatment and photoprotection throughout the year to prevent repigmentation.

How can I prevent the appearance of spots after the treatment?

In case you are under the effect of any of the triggering factors for the appearance of spots (contraceptives, pregnancy, summer season, post-depilation, post-acne, post-peel, under photosensitising treatment, etc.), a daily treatment routine is essential, combining a depigmentation treatment, such as melan tran3x, with a high photoprotector such as melan 130+ pigment control.

How long until I can have injectables after my cosmelan® treatment?

You can commence cosmetic injectable treatments in the face area three (3) months post your in-clinic Cosmelan Mask (Peel).

Can cosmelan® be applied to the body?

No, Cosmelan should only be used to treat the facial area.

How many cosmelan® treatments are required?

Only one round of the cosmelan® Pigmentation Program is required to see dramatic results in the reduction of unwanted pigmentation. Depending on the severity or underlying cause of pigmentation, further treatments can be performed 6-monthly to manage recurrence.

How long does the cosmelan® treatment take?

The cosmelan® Pigmentation Program is a 7-month commitment to your skin! It starts with 4 to 2 weeks of skin at-home preparation with in-clinic prep peel, followed by the in-clinic application of the Cosmelan Mask (Peel) – which is a fast and effective 30 minute treatment. This is left on the skin for the required time (8-12 hours, as per skin phototype and instructed by your expert dermal technician) and removed at home. The remaining 6 months of your program is completed mostly within the comfort of your own home – with the exception of your LED Light Therapy treatment and any additional treatments you elect to have.

Being an invasive treatment most clients can go about their normal days activities being mindful of sun exposure. General possible side effects Oedema/Erythema (swelling and redness) post removal of the in-clinic peel 48-72 hours Skin redness conditioned by inflammation due to excess blood flow. You can use hydravital mask to assist with swelling and redness, Desquamation (skin peeling) will generally begin to happen around day 2 or day 3, it is part of the skin renewal process. Again you can use melan recovery to help with the hydration and minimise peeling. Redness can last up to 2 weeks post treatment those who have sensitive skin can last anywhere up to 2-4 weeks post treatment.
Tightness is a usual feeling post removal of the mask of 48-72 hours as, it is the result of skin regeneration. highly recommend the use of the hydra-vital factor to help with that tightness feeling.
With phase II or III you may feel stinging or burning sensations, depending on skin sensitivity. You can use the hydravital mask or melan recovery to help subside any sensations, keep in mind you may need to space out the Cosmelan 2 applications if this is unbarring stinging or burning like feeling.
Swelling, sensitivity, itching or scaling (in particular after application of melan recovery that follows cosmelan 2)
Scabs (only in places where the clients scratches their face)
Transient increase of wrinkles (due to skin dehydration) must work on the products to keep your skin as hydrated as possible.
